Young people & the outdoors
The UK is the birthplace of organised youth adventure. Robert Baden-Powell founded the Scouts in 1907, and Kurt Hahn established Outward Bound in Aberdovey, Wales in 1941 — the model for challenge-by-choice outdoor learning worldwide. The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, launched in 1956, has since pushed millions of teenagers through self-directed expeditions, and the modern Forest School movement took root here in the 1990s.
